The Next New Thing
I would suggest some kind of a new technology for retail stores that would completely eliminate the need to have cash or credit cards at the time of purchasing. An application could be downloaded on consumers` smartphones and have a list of favorite stores that would be allowed to have an access to the necessary information for them to charge their customers. For instance, people who go to Walgreens on a daily basis could have their phone registered in the system of the store. Once the customer enters the doors of Walgreens his/her smartphone would be recognized by the store`s system and the customer would be automatically charged for his/hr purchase. The same with the subway system. People could have a certain amount if money transferred on their metro cards once the value on their cards reached a certain threshold.

Our Class Wiki-So Far
In order to contribute to our class wiki I have created a page on the topic called Anonymous. I have done a research about the "hactivist" group called Anonymous online and created a wiki page that has some information about the short history of the group, their activities, and goals. Members of the group wear masks in order not to be identified, so i have posted an image of the mask and the group`s logo.
My wiki page has a content sections and references at very bottom of the page containing the sources that i have used in oder to create the page.

P2P File Sharing
- What is file sharing?
- What is P2P File sharing?
- What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
1. File sharing is storing and distribution, and proving an access to digitally stored files like documents, pictures, programs, music. Such distribution can be performed using different intranets, local networks, and World Wide Web.
2. P2P File Sharing (peer-to-peer) is online file sharing that allows you to download digital files using P2P software. The P2P software searches for other connected computers that you eventually will be sharing files with. In order to perform P2P file sharing, you need The Internet connection and P2P software.
3. According to David Y. Choi, one of the first P2P file sharing softwares was Napster. Other examples of P2P file sharing softwares are Kazza, Gnutella, and BitTorrent, with the help of which music, videos, documents can be downloaded.

Privecy and Confidentiality
In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media.
With the rapid growth of new media along came the problem of privacy and confidentiality. Very often the Internet users disclose and share their information on different networking websites being very careless. Very often we rely on privacy setting that all websites have but that is not enough for keeping our information save online. It is well known that what is posted online will stay there.
Our online accounts can be hacked and used by a third party. It will not necessarily harm you: many companies want our information just for their marketing purposes. On the other hand, those hackers who have a negative intent of using your credit card information may cost you a very high price.
No privacy setting can ever protect our information online. The only way to secure it to limit what you are disclosing about yourselves, use credit cards instead of debit cards online, constantly change passwords, and etc. Even all these precautions will not guarantee a complete safety of our online information but they will significantly lower the possibility of somebody breaking into your account.
Advice to Baruch college
You are hired by Baruch College to use new
media to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make
using new media?
I believe that Baruch College is doing a pretty good job using some New Media in its daily operations but it does still need improvements. The number of freshmen or transfer students is quite high because the college has a good reputation. Nevertheless, Baruch can do more of social networking using Facebook, which it does, Twitter, My Space. It can post some photos of recent improvements of the campus like the outside launch area between Vertical Center and the library. It should definitely avoid posting any pictures of the old 23rd building and the endless line for the elevators.
I believe that the recruitment process will be much cheaper and less time consuming if the college uses social networking websites.
I would also suggest to create a better networking system between students and professors, some sort of Facebook for Baruch College. Sometimes it is hard to reach professors via emails. Blackboard does not really serve that purpose. The new network would be accessable by Baruch students and professors only. Each professor would have a professional profile. Students could also leave their feedbacks regarding professors just like on RateMy Professor. com. Descriptions of classes might be found on website too. Students could also create study groups, share information on their HW, assignments, and projects.

Creativity and New Media
To complete this assignment I have created an account on Second Life. There are several options that you can go with in order to create your own avatar. I have chosen an avatar image that suits me: she is a student and has some features similar to mine.
Here is a snapshot of my avatar. She just made new friends and was invited to a party. The Second Life experience is definitely new for me, I have never been in a Virtual World before. It does look interesting as a game but, personally, I would never substitute real life communication with it.
Creativity
New Media has become a great tool for many artists and musicians who use it either to enhance quality and looks of their "masterpieces" or to create a completely new and fresh piece.
There are many reasons and incentives those people of art have in order to use new media in their creative process. One of the reasons is the novelty and uniqueness that new media gives: it makes music sound different and art look exaggerated.
Another reason is the cost. There are a lot of talented individuals out there not everyone has an opportunity to promote their skills. In her article 1+1+1=1, Sasha Frere-Jones says that "You don’t need a distributor, because your distribution is the Internet. You don’t need a record label, because it’s your bedroom, and you don’t need a recording studio, because that’s your computer. You do it all yourself.” Indeed, "mashup", a web application, makes it possible for many composers and DJs to create new songs and soundtracks by laying the music from one song over the vocal of another. According to the author of the article mentioned above, such great artists as Jay-Z and Linkin Park, have used the web app before and the project became a number-one mashup album.
Another musician, Soulja Boy, has used Disney World characters in his video called "Crank That". According to Brooks Barns, the author of the article called Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?, the video was created by "editing together snippets of animated movies and TV shows. The finished products look like music videos in which the cartoon characters do the singing. As “Crank That” climbed the music charts over the summer — the song hit No. 1".
The Internet allows its users exchange their ideas fast and very cheap. Many companies benefit from collaboration with their customers who have new ideas in how to improve the business, and especially e-business.

Modeling Reality With Virtual Worlds
There several ways that virtual worlds can be used nowadays. For example, according to Mark Tutton, virtual world technologies are being applying by many businesses that use it for virtual meetings. "IBM sells its own virtual meeting tool, Sametime 3D, which allows businesses to share ideas and collaborate in a 3D world, and the company is currently testing a more advanced version of the product", says Mark. Such collaboration saves the company a lot of time and money.
But along with all the advantages such as saving of time and money, ability to work with long-distance partners, easy accessibility, there some cons to virtual worlds as well. No matter how advanced the technologies are, virtual worlds still lack real face-to-face communication which can lead to complete isolation. Mark Tutton in his article Going To The Virtual Office in Second Life says that another problem of the technology is that "virtual teams can't take advantage of the kind of impromptu "water cooler" conversations that occur in a real workplace, where colleagues can share information they may have forgotten to communicate in meetings". Indeed such closeness can be accomplished only in the real world.

Other ways, in which virtual technologies are use, are file sharing and storage using "Dropbox" and project work via "Basecamp" that allows its users to collaborate online and finish their projects faster.
Virtual worlds almost have no boundaries and require no budget. One can create his/her own character the way he wants him to look, dress him in a way he/she would never dress in reality. Very often we cannot express ourselves wearing our favorite styles, especially working in an office where a dress code is a must. But in virtual worlds you can free your creativity. It takes some sense of fashion, art, and experience in photography to create a virtual world. Dave Itzkoff in his article I've been in that club just not in Real Life says that "To fill these knowingly grungy environs VLES’s creators turned to Judi Rosen, the fashion designer and proprietor of the downtown boutique the Good, the Bad & the Ugly, to photograph real-life denizens of the Lower East Side. Then they created a variety of avatars using her photographs for fashion reference. “You can’t just have generic skater boys,” Ms. Rosen said, “because there’s punk skaters, there’s hippie skaters, there’s graffiti skaters, there’s square skaters. All those little nuances mean a lot.”
The future of virtual worlds still is not clear. It might become an even bigger hit or its popularity because it lacks some features of the real world that ca not be replaced by any advanced technologies. It is hard and impossible to substitute real communication and the bonding that we experience while interacting with the others. References:

Blog About Twitter
Twitter is famous for its "limitless". The number of characters that can be used to create a twit is 140. That makes Twitter users deliver their messages as clear as possible. Sometimes it is very difficult to express an idea in a single phrase but that is what makes Twitter so appealing; it is less time consuming, very mobile, and concrete.
BlackBoard discussions require more thinking and details. Twits are mostly used to catch somebodies attention but on Blackboard any topic has to be expended in order to let readers know what the idea of the discussion is, your opinion on it. BlackBoard discussions are more dynamic but engage a limited number of participants - students and professors. It also takes much longer to view posts on the Board , which are bigger than twits. Twitter, on the other hand, is available to anybody and discussions can be supported by different people with a large variety of interests.
An in-class discussion is completely opposite to those on Twitter. People do not twit in reality, we do not speak short sentences, we don not just throw a phrase out there and wait for it to be followed. An in-class discussion is a constant interaction of students and professors. In order to deliver an idea a student or a professor has to introduce a topic, engage his/her listeners, explain the main concepts of it. Such discussions are always followed by feedbacks of the others, which creates an on-going conversation.

Social Networking Sites
I have looked at the following social networking sites:
- Myspace
I used to have an account on Facebook. Or, to be more precise, i still have it but it is deactivated. Those who have or used to have an account with the social network are, probably, aware of the fact that it is impossible to completely delete "yourself"from Facebook.
The network serves different purposes for its users; professional and personal. Some pages of it look quite official. Many companies and start-up businesses place their advertisements on Facebook. The others use the network solely for fun to stay connected with their friends or find a new relationship.
Twitter is more limited, i would say. Starting with a certain amount of characters you can use for a twitt (140) and ending with specific tools you will have to apply in order to complete your search successfully. Twitter is all about following or being followed by somebody. The network is very popular among celebrities. It helps fans to follow their favorites and keep updated on the latest news. For them Twitter is a direct sources where they find out about celebrities not via the news but directly from the stars.
Myspace looks more like Facebook. But if you look closer it you may notice that one of the main differences between the two networks is the design selection you can have for you own page. Facebook pages look the same. When i created an account on Myspace, i was surprised how many options i had to make my page unique. Another feature about Myspace is the user type. If Facebook is mostly for business people, Myspace attracts users with creative tendencies: artists, singers, designers.
Instagram is another networking site that started out as a photo-shareing app and now it is merging with Facebook. It has a number of filters that allow you to alter the original picture.

Social Networking
Social Networking
What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?
It is well known today that many social network web sites are not used for entertainment purposes only. Facebook became a huge virtual market place where people promote their "new-born" businesses. Social network called Linkedin is one of the highly used websites by millions of employers representing not only small businesses but many world wide companies which shows how reliable the network has become with years. Frank Langfitt in his article called Social Networking Technologies Boosts Job Recruiting says that "Linkedin says users include executives from all of the Fortune 500 companies. Typing keywords into a search engine, Crawford can scrape the entire network to dig out high-quality candidates that she can't find elsewhere... Professional recruiters have started hunting for job candidates using social networking technology — like the kind found on the popular sites MySpace and Facebook... Social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to happen to recruiting — ever."
Chick Hamillton, the author of the article called What's next? Your Future in Social Networking, names these technologies "key tools for business innovation." He says that "Social networks allow businesses to collaborate with all kind of people, with diverse backgrounds and different levels of expertise, from locations from all over the world." Many companies taking their new designs and put them on the Internet allowing their potential clients to get familiar with it.
It is needless to say that social networks are widely used by the corporate world. But most of them started as small Intranets, for example, Facebook was created within the walls of Harvard with a limited access. Now Facebook is used all over the world as a mean of communication. People create not only friendships but romantic relationships as well. They use it as a hobby or take it as serious as their carriers.
What are the benefits of these technologies to society?
The benefits of networks are countless. As was mentioned before, social networks bring millions of people together. It could gather groups of people sharing the same ideas or professionals exchanging different experiences, teaching it to the others and learning something new at the same time. It made much cheaper for companies to do businesses; advertising became more affordable and a much greater amount of customers is reached in no time with the help of these technologies.
And how about those who could never make a single friend and now he/she has a 150 on Facebook. The network puts its users in whole communities that would be almost impossible to create in reality. But of course there is a dark side to it. No matter how advanced those networks are nowadays, their privacy is still too far from being perfect. It is good when a top-ten-company employer notices a qualified professional on Facebook. But what if he digs deeper and sees the pictures that are ok to be seen by his/her friends but are not appropriate for the potential employer. Cyber bullying is becoming one of the most serious concerns of social networks. "Students have more ways than ever to post anonymous attacks on classmates, thanks (or rather, no thanks) to new and expanded online forums promising to be bigger and juicier than the infamous JuicyCampus, which drew fierce protests from harassed students before it shut down earlier this year."- Jeffry R. Young writes in his article They Are Back and They are Bad: Campus-Gossip Websites.
Social Networks continue growing and developing. They take businesses processes to the next level faster while making it much easier and, I believe, with the new technologies development and the Internet users applying their social network knowledge and skills, the future of these technologies would look even more promising.

Blog v Wiki
Compare and contrast blogs and wikis
Wikis are either Web sites that are accessible by any Internet user or an Intranet application that is used within a single company. The main and most important characteristic of a wiki is collaboration. It attracts and encourages people with related interests to collaborate in a single process while creating and editing a page on a certain topic. Ward Cunningham and co-author Bo Leuf, in their book The Wiki Way: Quick Collaboration on the Web, described a wiki as "not a carefully crafted site for casual visitors. Instead, it seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the Web site landscape."
In order to edit a wiki page, a simple markup language must be used. As Ward Cunningham and Bo Leuf mentioned "A wiki is essentially a database for creating, browsing, and searching through information. A wiki allows for non-linear, evolving, complex and networked text, argument and interaction."
Many wikis do not require their users to create an account and allow them to alter pages without any reviews before modification are accepted.
A wiki can be compared to a database, some kind of an information storage that is constantly updated and edited by not only its creator but its reader as well.
Ezra Goodnoe in his article How to use wikis for businesses said that "Wikis are structurally capable of handling conversation, but it is not their forte; instead, wikis excel at collaboration. They are intended to maintain a series of unique documents as their content evolves and to provide an organic means of organizing that information. You're looking for an exchange of views. Wikis are not the best tool for airing opinions or carrying on conversations. If that's your primary goal, use a blog instead."
Blogs, in their turn, were derived from traditional journalism. There are used not only by professional journalists who publish their articles on a blog page but also regular Internet Browsers who are welcome to comment on the articles and provide their feedbacks. Kathy E. Gill in her article How can we measure the influence of Blogosphere describes blogs as "participatory journalism that embraces the expended two way communication between established media and reader, allowing readers interact wit journalists and new organizations." Unlike wikis there is no editorial over site in blogs. Readers are not able to edit articles published on blog pages but they can comment on them, participate in conversations and discussions, and express their opinion.
Convergence is very important in today's networked world. It made communication much faster and more efficient. Instead of using multiple technologies worldwide corporations make and process their complicated transactions with the help of a single device. Convergence made telecommunication possible as well; long distance, live conferences and meetings became possible in today`s business world. Such applications as wikis are widely used by many companies which helps them to work on projects more efficiently.
Blogs can be used for collaboration as well. Having strong influence on politics, blogs can be used
in different campaigns which usually need teamwork and collaboration.
Wikis can be widely used for advertisement where a single product is recommended by different users. Those who have used the product might update and edit the already - existing description of it.

The topic of my project is "Social Networking: better or worse than the real thing?"
The objective of my paper is to explore the existing social network websites and to find out how great their role is for nowadays society. While doing the research I would like to answer the following questions:
- How important social networking is today?
- What is the main purpose of such websites?
- Can social networking eventually replace real social interaction?
- Is social networking better or worse than the real thing?
In order to answer the above listed questions I will choose one of the most popular network websites, for example, Facebook, and do a research on how it is used and what it provides to the Internet users.
I would also like to look at all the advantages and disadvantages of the social network.
